About the Artist

Judith Challis picked up her brush after many years of being too busy to paint after a car accident.   She paints both from real life and her imagination and hopes you enjoy what you see here.

She is happily married to a delightful Brit and lives in New York State..

Artist’s Statement

I start every painting with the mantra “paint what you know” in my mind.   To know is more than to see or to copy, it is to internalize and express the essence of that moment.  To take the concept and run my mental fingers over it, turn it over in my mind and use every one of my senses to explore the concept before I put pencil to paper or brush to canvas.

Some of my work captures that moment when you awake from a dream, the message and  images slowly melting back into your subconscious as the mist of conscious thought slowly fills the brain with the mundane activities of the day, such as “time to brush your teeth”,  far less interesting than the landscape of the dream.  Other concepts may come to me during meditation.  I prefer to paint in oils, but also use acrylics and like to play with different media to add to the paint such as megilp or lavender oil to add texture or shine, as needed.

When you look at one of my paintings, give your mind a moment to wander and see what story may be evoked.   Look at the characters and write your own little fairytale.  You may discover something about my painting and you may also discover something about yourself.
